The Zombies
"Odessey And Oracle"

Released: 1968
Ah, it's difficult to think of a band that looked more un-hip than The Zombies (well,
maybe Freddie And The Dreamers...). But looks aren't that important as long as the
music's alright. This is of course something that doesn't seem to be important today.
Much like The Beatles were perfectly aware that "Abbey Road" would be the last album they
recorded, The Zombies knew that "Odessey And Oracle" would be their swan-song. It was
made in the summer of 1967 in EMI's studios at Abbey Road on a very limited budget, simply
because their label, CBS, was not very interested in the project. I mean, of course they
knew about the group's demise too, so why spend a fortune on them? This meant that The
Zombies didn't have to pay much attention to what CBS expected them to do (there were no
expectations), but were free to do whatever they pleased. As long as they stayed within
the budget, obviously. And who knows, maybe this is why "Odessey And Oracle" is such a gem.
This isn't heavy music - it's flawless 60's pop at it's very, very best.
