The Beatles
"The Beatles" (a.k.a. "The White Album)

Released: 1968
"The Beatles" is the group's most varied effort, which to some extent certainly is because it's a double-album. There's everything from mawkish ballads to hard rock, from folk whimsy to experimental avantgarde. I like this because it shows how incredibly broad The Beatles were, not only in their tastes, but also in their ability to perform music in very diverse styles. Very raw recording too, which is a bit of a relief after "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (which of course is a great record but in a different way). There's no "theme" and no real structure to this album, which goes to show that things like that aren't necessary if only the material is strong enough. George Martin tried to convince The Beatles to pick out the best songs and make it a single album. And some people probably think that would have been better. I don't agree.
Did you know "Revolver" is a wonderful record by The Beatles?
