The Smiths
"The Queen Is Dead"

Released: 198
There was a time when I listened a lot to The Smiths, when the sentiments of Morrissey's
really moved me. I knew what he was singing about. These days I can't really
figure out why, as I haven't really gone through everything he's singing about. Still
there's something in those words that somehow makes you understand anyway... Mabye 'coz
I'm just as pitiful as old Morrissey, ha-ha...
I would probably never have heard of this group unless an American pen-pal had included one
of their songs on a tape she sent me. That was "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", one
of the most morbid and yet absolutely adorable songs I've ever heard. That song alone makes
this album a must, but luckily there's more. I mean, more than anything, The Smiths played
brilliant pop songs. Nice little tunes with interesting lyrics. What else can you ask for?
Well, you could ask for the long and totally miserable (lyricwise) "I Know It's
Over". Ah, I'm one for selfpity and melancholia...
If you want a really good Smiths collection of brilliant, brilliant pop songs there's an
album called "The World Won't Listen", which is like a "Best of", but without that name on
it.
