Fairport Convention
"Liege And Lief"

Released: 1969
Fairport Convention was certainly one of the leading groups in the "folk rock"
movement in the late sixties and the seventies. With people like Richard Thompson
and Sandy Denny things couldn't really go wrong. "Liege And Lief" is generally
regarded as one of their best albums. It mainly contains traditional songs, which
might be why I favour this one. I have a weak spot for "true" folk songs instead
of the ones that are written to sound old (although there are some good ones
around, see for instance The Waterboys' "Fisherman's Blues"). This is timeless
stuff, beautifully performed. Fairport Convention still exists as a group, but
the line-up has changed considerably.
If you like this one, also try "Tippler's Tales" from 1978. The group Steeleye
Span is pretty much in the same vein, but their albums tend to be very uneven.
Go for the early ones like "Please To See The King" or "Hark! The Village Waite".
