World Party
"Goodbye Jumbo"

Released: 1990
Previously a member of The Waterboys, Karl Wallinger quit that group prior to the recording of
their "Fisherman's Blues" album (curiously there's a song on that album called..."World Party"!).
Wallinger obviously felt slightly trapped in The Waterboys, as its main-man, Mike Scott, wouldn't
give Karl the space he definitely deserved in the field of song-writing. Wallinger's first album
under the name World Party was released in 1987. "Private Revolution" is a great album, but the
second, "Goodbye Jumbo", is his masterpiece. Leaning heavily on the 1960s it's still a most
original album with a bunch of perfect songs. A bit of a magpie he is, but a very clever and
likable magpie. In a way, this could have been the soundtrack to 1967s "Summer of Love".
Optimistic and inspiring as it is...
If you like this one, also try "Private Revolution" from 1987 and the much underrated "Egyptology"
from 1997. A bit in the same vein is the group The Lilac Time. Their best album is probably "& Love
For All" from 1990.
