Nick Drake
"Bryter Layter"

Released: 1970
Nick Drake...poor sod. One of the great English singer/songwriters, the problem
being that only critics seemed to understand that when he was still alive. This
is one of those albums that are so distinctly English. Articulate and sophisticated.
Hey, that sounds so boring. But this isn't a party album. It's one for the day
after the party. And indeed for a lot of other occasions. Drake's soft voice
has a tendency to creep into your spine and wander around there for a while. Beautiful
arrangements featuring a fair amount of strings and top musicians like Richard
Thompson and John Cale. Best moments? Oh, I'd say "Hazey Jane II" and "Fly"...
If you enjoy this album you should check out Nick Drake's first album "Five Leaves
Left" (which a lot of people prefer). And John Cale's "Paris 1919".
