David Sylvian
"Secrets of the Beehive"

Released: 19
David Sylvian used to be a member of the group Japan and hasn't been that productive
since that group's demise. Okay, he's made a number of albums, but most of them are
collaborations with other people and they're in the "ambient" style; instrumental
stuff mainly. I don't care much for that. Sylvian's got such a beautiful voice and
it seems strange that he doesn't use it more. "Secrets of the Beehive" is my favourite
among his vocal albums. Wonderfully textured it's got a great number of incredibly
beautiful melody-lines and fantastic lyrics. Much like Nick Drake's "Bryter Layter"
this is far from a party album. It's more for lazy summer days or Sundays in Septemer.
Soft, soft, soft... And above all that voice! Stand-out tracks: "Let The
Happiness In", "Orpheus" and the achingly beautiful "Forbidden Colors"...
If you enjoy this album you could check out Sylvian's "Brilliant Trees", which is
slightly more of a pop album. He's also featured on fellow Japan-member Mick Karn's
album "Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters" (!). Despite its title a very interesting
record.
