Lou Reed
"Berlin"

Released: 1973
Decadent, suicidal, scary...whatever. Not the most accessible Lou Reed album, but once you get into it it's soooo good. And quite beautiful in all its bleakness. Several of the songs were recorded by The Velvet Underground in radically different versions (and mostly with other titles) but never used; for instance "Sad Song", "Oh Jim" and "Caroline Says". Great production, great songs, great singing from Lou. On one track, "The Bed", there are children crying and screaming for their mummy. They were brought into the studio and then told that their mother had died! No wonder it sounds heartbreakingly real!
If you somehow enjoy this album you could very well search out "Transformer" and "Street Hassle" by Lou Reed.
